Għar‑Randan ta’ din is‑sena, aħna l‑Isqfijiet qed nipproponu biex bħala pajjiż u bħala Nsara nirriflettu fuq il‑ħames doni mingħand il‑Mulej li l‑poeta nazzjonali Dun Karm Psaila jfakkarna fihom fl‑Innu Malti: id‑dehen, il‑ħniena, is‑saħħa, l‑għaqda u s‑sliem.

“Mexxini fis‑sewwa tiegħek”

L‑ewwel don hu d‑dehen: il‑kapaċità li wieħed jifhem, jagħraf u jiddeċiedi li jagħżel it‑tajjeb mill‑ħażin. Fl‑ewwel Ħadd tar‑Randan, nitolbu fis‑Salm: “Triqatek, Mulej, għarrafni. Il‑mogħdijiet tiegħek għallimni, mexxini fis‑sewwa tiegħek u għallimni” (Salm 25:4‑5). Il‑kelma tal‑Mulej hija kelma ta’ għerf u mhux ta’ bluha; hi kelma li se tagħmillek dejjem il‑ġid.

L‑għerf u l‑għaqal iwasslu wkoll biex nieħdu deċiżjonijiet li jmorru lil hinn mill‑interessi personali. Il‑bniedem għaref u l‑mexxej għaqli huma dawk li fid‑deċiżjonijiet tagħhom jinkludu lil kulħadd, inkluż lil dawk li ġejjin warajna. Jekk nixtiequ li l‑kliem tant sabiħ tas‑sostenibbiltà u l‑inklużjoni verament ifissru xi ħaġa, irridu nkunu dawn it‑tip ta’ mexxejja u ċittadini.

“Għani fil‑ħniena”

It‑tieni don hu l‑ħniena, li jagħmilna nixbhu tassew lil Alla. Kif ifisser San Pawl: “Alla, għani fil‑ħniena tiegħu, bis‑saħħa tal‑imħabba kbira li biha ħabbna, meta aħna konna mejta minħabba fi dnubietna, tana ħajja ġdida flimkien ma’ Kristu ‑ bi grazzja intom salvi” (Ef 2:4‑5).

Il‑Mulej jgħidilna li l‑imħabba tagħna trid tkun imħabba ta’ mogħdrija u dan kollu jinġabar fil‑kelma ‘ħniena’. Li tħenn tfisser li tgħin lil xi ħadd fil‑mument ta’ bżonn, imma wkoll li qalbek tħabbat dejjem għall‑proxxmu tiegħek.

Li tħenn tfisser ukoll li flok tiġġudika, tikkundanna u tkisser persuni oħra minn wara screen, tagħżel li f’kull persuna tara dik l‑umanità komuni li tagħmilna tassew aħwa. F’dinja fejn hu faċli ħafna li ngħaffġu u “narmu” n‑nies bil‑kliem u l‑għemil tagħna, tajjeb nistaqsu b’liema mod aħna l‑Insara nistgħu nkunu xhieda tal‑ħniena ta’ Alla li mingħajr ma tinjora l‑verità, tfittex dejjem li tgħolli lil min jinsab mgħaffeġ taħt il‑piżijiet tal‑ħajja.

Fir‑Randan tajjeb ukoll li bħala Nsara nagħmlu l‑esperjenza sabiħa tal‑ħniena ta’ Alla billi nersqu għas‑Sagrament tal‑Qrar, fejn niltaqgħu mal‑għajn tal‑ħniena.

“Kien ifejjaq lil kull min kien nieqes minn saħħtu”

It‑tielet don li jsemmi Dun Karm fl‑Innu Malti hu d‑don tas‑saħħa. Meta naħsbu fuq is‑saħħa qed ninkludu s‑saħħa fiżika u s‑saħħa mentali, kif ukoll is‑saħħa spiritwali.

Bil‑mewt u l‑qawmien tiegħu, Ġesù ġabilna l‑kelma ‘salvazzjoni’, li tfisser benesseri, sigurtà, u fl‑aħħar mill‑aħħar saħħa – salus. Għalhekk, il‑kelma ‘salvazzjoni’ hi propju l‑istedina biex inħarsu lejn is‑saħħa tagħna b’mod ħolistiku. Ġesù jimpurtah minna. Hu jridilna l‑ġid u jrid ifejjaqna mit‑tbatijiet tagħna. Fir‑Randan u fl‑Għid Imqaddes, Ġesù ġej fostna bħala t‑Tabib tar‑Ruħ. Għandna bżonn nilqgħuh f’qalbna biex inkunu nistgħu nfiequ.

Xi drabi nistgħu wkoll innaqqsu ftit mill‑għaġla ta’ kuljum u nħarsu madwarna. Jista’ jkun hemm kollega li għaddejja minn mument diffiċli; ġar li saħħtu marret lura; u omm jew missier li tilfu xogħolhom. Li nieqfu, nintebħu, nisimgħu, inkellmu u nakkumpanjaw lil xi ħadd li qed ibati tista’ tassew tkun l‑ikbar għotja ta’ karità għal dan iż‑żmien tar‑Randan.

“Ma jkunx hemm firdiet fostkom”

Ir‑raba’ don hu l‑għaqda, li ġejja mill‑fatt li nirrispettaw lil xulxin u niddeċiedu li naħdmu flimkien u niġbdu ħabel wieħed, minkejja li xi drabi ma naqblux f’kollox. Tajjeb nitolbu għad‑don tal‑għaqda fil‑koppji tagħna, fil‑familji, fil‑parroċċi u fil‑Knisja.

Imma nitolbu wkoll għall‑għaqda fost il‑poplu tal‑Istat tagħna, li din is‑sena qiegħed jiċċelebra 60 sena indipendenti u 50 sena repubblika. Biex nimxu ’l quddiem bħala soċjetà, għandna l‑urġenza niskopru mill‑ġdid l‑arti tad‑djalogu rispettuż. Speċjalment fuq livell politiku, id‑djalogu ta’ spiss hu interpretat bħala sinjal ta’ dgħufija. Xi drabi għandna tendenza nippreferu persuna li, biex toħnoq l‑ilħna tal‑oħrajn, tattakka, twaqqa’ u tweġġa’ bi kliemha. B’dan il‑mod, il‑ġid komuni qatt ma jista’ jintlaħaq u  żgur li qatt mhu se niksbu l‑għaqda.

Hekk kif il‑pajjiż qed iħejji ruħu għall‑elezzjonijiet tal‑kunsilli lokali u l‑Parlament Ewropew, inħeġġu lil kull min hu involut fil‑ħajja pubblika u politika sabiex ma jibżax jagħżel it‑triq kuraġġuża tas‑smigħ umli u tad‑djalogu rispettuż.

“Jiena nħallilkom is‑sliem” 

Il‑ħames u l‑aħħar don li nsibu fl‑Innu Malti hu dak tas‑sliem. Fl‑Għid il‑Kbir niftakru fit‑tislima tal‑Irxoxt: “Is‑sliem għalikom!” (Ġw 20:19). San Ġorġ Preca wkoll kien jisħaq li għandna nilqgħu lil xulxin b’din it‑tislima. Iżda l‑paċi ma tiġix mill‑kliem jew mill‑fomm biss, imma mill‑qalb. Ma tistax tagħti l‑paċi lil ħaddieħor jekk f’qalbek m’għandekx paċi.

Kif jinsisti Dun Karm, il‑paċi tibqa’ dejjem don mill‑Mulej. Għandna bżonn il‑paċi fid‑dinja, il‑paċi bejnietna, il‑paċi fil‑familji tagħna, u l‑paċi f’qalbna. Tista’ tkun l‑ikbar sinjur tad‑dinja imma jekk f’qalbek ma għandekx il‑paċi, inti bniedem fqir. Min għandu l‑paċi, ikun f’liema ċirkustanza jkun, jgħum fl‑ikbar barka tal‑Mulej.

Illum faċli naqtgħu qalbna quddiem il‑ħafna kunflitti li għaddejjin fl‑Art Imqaddsa, fl‑Ukrajna, fis‑Sudan u f’postijiet oħra. Huma l‑mexxejja tal‑pajjiżi li għandhom is‑setgħa u r‑responsabbiltà jwaqqfu din il‑qerda assurda. Madanakollu, aħna lkoll imsejħin inkunu bennejja tal‑paċi. Il‑paċi jew il‑vjolenza ta’ bejnietna jiddependu fuq id‑deċiżjonijietkbar u żgħar—li nieħdu ta’ kuljum. Il‑paċi hi frott deċiżjonijiet tajba u responsabbli. Meta ninjoraw il‑verità u l‑ġustizzja, meta rridu li dejjem ikollna raġun, u meta s‑suċċess u l‑flus isiru l‑idoli tagħna, inkunu qed niżirgħu ż‑żerriegħa tal‑vjolenza.

Iżda meta nersqu lejn Kristu Imsallab u Rxoxt u nidħlu fl‑iskola tal‑imħabba tal‑Mulej, inkunu qed ninfetħu għad‑don tal‑paċi tiegħu, biex flimkien miegħu nsiru bennejja tal‑paċi.

Hekk kif bdejna din il‑mixja ta’ 40 jum, il‑barka tagħna fuqna u fuq pajjiżna, hi dik ta’ Ġesù stess: il‑paċi magħkom.

Five blessings for our country

The Pastoral Letter by the Bishops

For this year’s Lent, we Bishops are proposing that as a country, and as Christians, we ought to reflect on the five gifts of God that Dun Karm Psaila, the national poet, reminds us of in Malta’s national anthem: sound judgement, mercy, health, unity and peace.

“Guide me in your truth”

The first gift is sound judgement: the ability to understand, recognise and decide to choose good over evil. We pray the Psalm on the first Sunday of Lent: “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me” (Psalm 25:4-5). God’s word is a word of wisdom. It is not foolish. It will always do us good.

Wisdom and acting responsibly means setting aside self-interest in our decision-making. Wise people and responsible leaders take decisions that take everyone into consideration, including those who shall follow us. We need these types of leaders and citizens for our fine words regarding sustainability and inclusion to mean anything.

“Rich in mercy”

The second gift is mercy, through which we truly resemble God. As St Paul explains: “God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved” (Eph 2:4-5).

The Lord tells us that our love needs to be compassionate. This is encompassed in the word ‘mercy’. Being merciful means helping another in time of need, but it also means that your heart should always beat for your neighbour’s heart.

Being merciful also means that—rather than judging, condemning, and destroying others on media and social media—you opt to see in every person the humanity we share that truly makes us brothers and sisters.  In a world where it is extremely easy to crush and ‘discard’ people through our words and actions, it would be good to ask how we Christians can be witnesses to the mercy of God, which, without ignoring the truth, always seeks to raise up those who are oppressed by the hardships of life.

During Lent, it would also be beneficial for us Christians to partake in the beautiful experience of God’s mercy by frequenting the Sacrament of Confession, where we encounter the source of mercy.

“He healed all who were sick”

The third gift mentioned by Dun Karm in our national anthem is health which encompasses both physical and mental health, as well as spiritual health.

Through his death and resurrection, Jesus brought us the term ‘salvation’ which means welfare, safety and, ultimately, health – salus. The word ‘salvation’ is an invitation to view our health holistically. Jesus cares about us. He wants what is good for us and yearns to heal us from our sufferings. During Lent and Holy Easter, Jesus will be among us as the Doctor of the Soul. We need to welcome Him into our hearts so that we may be healed.

At times, we should also pause for a moment from our rushed daily routines and look around us. There may be a colleague going through a tough time; a neighbour whose health has deteriorated; and a mother or father who have lost their job. Stopping to notice, listen, speak to and accompany someone who is suffering could be the greatest gift of charity during this period of Lent.

“There will be no division between you”

The fourth gift is unity which stems from our mutual respect and commitment to work together. This means pulling at the same rope, despite not always being in agreement about everything. It would be good for us to pray for the gift of unity among couples, families, within our parishes and also within the Church.

Let us also pray for unity among the people of our nation which this year celebrates 60 years of independence and 50 years as a republic. To advance as a society, we need to urgently rediscover the art of respectful dialogue. Dialogue, especially on a political level, is often considered a sign of weakness. Sometimes, we tend to prefer people who drown out the voices of others through verbal attacks, ridicule and hurtful language. Yet the quality of political debate is invariably poorer when we engage with each other in this manner. With such negative attitudes, the common good can never be served and we will certainly never achieve unity.

As the country gears up for local council and European Parliament elections, we encourage all who are involved in public and political life not to shy away from courageously choosing to listen humbly and engaging in respectful dialogue.

“I leave you peace” 

The fifth and final gift we find in the Maltese national anthem is peace. At Easter, we remember the greeting of the Risen Lord: “Peace be with you!” (Jn 20:19). St George Preca also used to insist that we should greet each other in this way. However, peace does not merely emanate from our words or our lips. It must come from the heart. You cannot offer peace to another person if you do not have peace in your heart.

As Dun Karm stresses, peace is a gift from the Lord. We need peace in the world, peace among us, peace in our families, and peace in our hearts. You can be the richest person in the world in material terms, but if you do not have peace in your heart, you are a pauper. Those with peace in their hearts receive the greatest blessing bestowed by the Lord, whatever circumstances they happen to find themselves in.

It is easy for us to become disheartened by the many conflicts in the world today – in places like the Holy Land, Ukraine, Sudan and other regions. Nations’ leaders are the ones endowed with the power and responsibility to stop this absurd destruction. Nevertheless, we are also called to be bringers of peace. Peace or violence between us depend on the decisions—big or small—that we take each day. Peace is the fruit of good, responsible decisions. When we ignore truth and justice, when we think we are always right, and when success and money become our idols, we sow the seed of violence.

However, when we draw near to the Crucified Christ and the Risen Lord, and when we participate in the Lord’s school of love, we allow his peace to enter and together with him become bringers of peace.

Now that we have started this 40-day journey, our blessing for us and our country is Jesus’ own: peace be with you.
