Holy Week presses the Church once more into the temporal mystery at the heart of the Gospel: that Jesus “was raised on the third day” (1 Corinthians 15:4). Yet this seemingly simple phrase conceals a richly textured biblical idiom. Far from demanding a mathematically precise seventy-two hours, the scriptural language of “three days” and “the third day” participates in the Hebrew practice of inclusive time reckoning, wherein any portion of a day is counted as a full day.
