Fil-ħajja saċerdotali tiegħu dejjem wera ħeġġa partikolari għall-appostolat, dedikazzjoni kbira għat-talb, determinazzjoni soda fl-għażliet tiegħu, entużjażmu ferrieħi għall-aġġornament tat-tagħlim tal-Konċilju Vatikan II, ħbiberija sinċiera ma’ ħutu s-saċerdoti kollha, akkumpanjament siewi lis-seminaristi fil-formazzjoni tagħhom, imħabba kbira lejn il-missjoni, u rassenjazzjoni qaddisa fil-marda tiegħu fl-aħħar snin ta’ ħajtu. Dan kollu għamel lil Dun Mikiel qassis “ġawhra” tal-kleru Għawdxi, kif iddeskrivieh l-Isqof Nikol Ġ. Cauchi fil-funeral tiegħu, nhar it-2 ta’ Awwissu 2004, quddiem 115-il saċerdot konċelebrant u folla kbira ta’ ħafna fidili fil-Bażilika tan-Nadur.

Minn meta miet, Dun Mikiel dejjem kellu fama ta’ qdusija, tant li l-Isqof ta’ Għawdex Mons. Mario Grech, wara biss sitt snin minn mewtu (01-11-2010), fuq talba ġenerali tal-kleru waqqaf il-Proċess kanoniku tal-Beatifikazzjoni u l-Kanonizzazzjoni tiegħu.

Biex jitfakkar is-sittin anniversarju tal-Ordinazzjoni saċerdotali tal-Qaddej ta’ Alla Dun Mikiel Attard, se jsiru tliet ċelebrazzjonijiet:
• l-Isqof Mario Grech se jmexxi Konċelebrazzjoni djoċesana, nhar is-Sibt 6 ta’ April, fis-6.30pm, fis-Santwarju Nazzjonali Ta’ Pinu, li kien tant għażiż għal Dun Mikiel;
• nhar il-Ġimgħa 12 ta’ April, il-ġurnata tal-anniversarju, se ssir quddiesa fi tmiem il-Pellegrinaġġ tad-Duluri, fil-Bażilika ta’ San Pietru u San Pawl, in-Nadur, fis-7.00pm;
• l-għada s-Sibt 13 ta’ April, fid-9.00am, l-Isqof se jiċċelebra quddiesa oħra fuq il-qabar ta’ Dun Mikiel, fil-Kappella taċ-Ċimiterju l-qadim tan-Nadur.

Inkomplu nitolbu lill-Mulej biex bl-interċessjoni ta’ dan il-Qaddej ta’ Alla naqilgħu l-grazzji li neħtieġu, u nittamaw li ma ndumux ma narawh mgħolli għad-dinjità tal-altari bħala barka għad-Djoċesi tagħna u għall-Knisja.

Celebration of the 60th anniversary from the Priestly Ordination
of the Servant of God Fr Michael Attard

Rev. Michael Attard, the eldest son among ten siblings from a family of a stone-mason from Nadur, Gozo, was ordained a priest by Mgr Joseph Pace, Bishop of Gozo, on 13 April 1959, at the Cathedral of the Assumption of the BVM, together with six other priests.

As a priest he always showed a special enthusiasm for the apostolate, a great dedication for prayer, a firm determination in his choices, a joyful eagerness for the updated teaching of Vatican Council II, a sincere friendship with his priestly brothers, a valuable accompaniment to the seminarians in their formation, a great love towards the missions, and a saintly acceptance of his illness during the last years of his life.

All this made Fr Michael a ‘jewel’ member of the Gozitan clergy, as Bishop Nikol Ġ. Cauchi described him during his funeral held on the 2 August 2004 at the Nadur Basilica, in front of 115 concelebrating priests and a large congregation of faithful.

Since his demise, Fr Michael always had a saintly reputation, so much so that, after only six years from his death and following a general petition by the clergy, Bishop Mario Grech on (01-11-2010) initiated a canonical process for his beatification and canonisation.

Three celebrations are being organised to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the Priestly Ordination of the Servant of God Rev. Michael Attard:
• Bishop Mario Grech will lead a Diocesan Concelebration on Saturday 6 April at 6.30pm, at the BVM of Ta’ Pinu National Sanctuary, which was so dear to Fr Michael;
• another Holy Mass will be said at the Nadur Basilica of Sts Peter and Paul, on Friday 12 April, at 7.00pm, just after the Pilgrimage of the BVM of Sorrows;
• on Saturday 13 April, at 9.00am, the Bishop will say Mass on the grave of Fr Michael Attard, at the Chapel of the old Cemetry of Nadur.

Let us continue to pray the Lord so that, by the intercession of this Servant of God, we will receive all the graces we need. Let us hope that it will not be long before we will see him raised to the dignity of the altars as a blessing for our Diocese and the Church.
