Professor Joseph Lam Cong Quy will be the Visiting Lecturer at the Augustinian Institute Pieta’ next week. Joseph will be lecturing on books 11 to 13 of the Confessions of Augustine of Hippo. Joseph was born 24th April 1975 in Bienhoa (Vietnam), Joseph’s current nationality is German. In 1995 he joined the Diocesan Seminary of “Pastor Bonus” in Würzburg, Germany and in the same year he took up studies in Philosophy and Theology at the Julius-Maximilian University in Würzburg. In 1997 he completed his studies in Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome. In 2000 he obtained an MA. Hons (Rel. Stud) from the Catholic University of Louvain, with a dissertation on “The Psalm 103, 7 “Quaerite faciem eius semper” – A Philosophical-Theological Approach to the Notion of “Caritas” in the Works of Augustine”, the original was in German. He also holds an STL from the University of Louvain (2002) with a dissertation on: “Human Being as Event of Divine Auto-Communication: Karl Rahner’s Anthropological Christology Encounters Augustine’s Gracious Christology”, the original was in German.

JosephLamIn 2000 Joseph joined the Augustinians and in 2003 took his Solemn Vows. In 2005 he was Ordained to the Diaconate, and a year later to the Priesthood. He holds a BPhil from the University of Würzburg (GER), and a BTheol from the same University. In 2005 Joseph obtained a PhD/STD  from the University of Louvain, with a thesis on: “The Humanity of Jesus Christ in the Works of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo”, the original was in German. The major publications of J. Lam Cong Quy, are Die Menschheit Jesu Christi in den Werken des Augustinus, Bischof von Hippo (SEA, 102), Roma, 2007. [The Humanity of Jesus Christ in the Works of Augustine, Bishop of Hippo]; Theologische Verwandtschaft: Augustinus v. Hippo und Joseph Ratzinger/Papst Benedikt XVI, Würzburg, 2009. [Theological Relationship: Augustine of Hippo and Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI], and Joseph Ratzinger’s Theological Retractations: Pope Benedict XVI on Revelation, Christology and Ecclesiology, (Frankfurt-Oxford-New York: Peter Lang, July 2013). He also edited a number of books and is a regular contributor of articles to a number of international journals and lexika in theology, philosophy and patristics, with Augustine as his forte.  Between 2005-2009 he was Professor and held the Chair of Patristic Trinitarian Theology at the Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum (IPA), Lateran University in Rome; in 2007 he was guest lecturer at the Pontificia Universita Gregoriana and Pontificia Universita di S. Tommaso d’Aquino in Urbe; in 2008 he was Visiting lecturer at the Augustinian “Theologicum” in Nairobi, Kenya; and in 2009 Head of Faculty of Philosophy and Theology of the Broken Bay Institute / University of Newcastle. Since 2009 he holds the professorial chair in Systematic Theology at the Australian Catholic University, Acting Chair of Research Committee, National Coordinator of Masters in Theology by Research.

Joseph Lam Quy OSA is currently on a year’s sabbatical leave from the Catholic University of Australia. He has been invited by the Augustinian Institute of Pieta’ to deliver the final two sessions of two hours each on books 11 to 13 of Augustine of Hippo’s Confessions. The sessions are part of the Lectio Augustini (2013-2014) at the Augustinian Institute, Pieta’. Dr. Lam Quy OSA will deliver the first session on Friday, 7th March 2014 between 18.00 and 20.00hrs, which also includes a 20-minute tea/coffee break; the second session will be on Friday 14th March 2014, between 18.00 and 20.00hrs. The public in general is cordially invited to attend the lectures and there are no participation fees involved.

  1. Interesting. But can someone enlighten me on the contemporary habit of not wearing the religious habit?
