This Months Reflection

How to Love Your Neighbour?

Loving your neighbour is a foundational teaching in the Christian faith, rooted in the commandment Jesus emphasized as second only to loving God: The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Mark 12:31). This call to love is not based on convenience, similarity, or mutual benefit. Instead, it reflects God’s own love—unconditional, self-giving, and inclusive. To love your neighbour is to recognize the divine image in each person and to treat them with the dignity and compassion that Christ Himself showed.

Christian love is not merely a feeling but a conscious choice to act with kindness, patience, and understanding toward others—even when it is difficult. It includes forgiving those who wrong us, helping those in need, and standing up for justice and truth. This love often requires sacrifice and humility, but it is through such selflessness that we live out the Gospel. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus illustrates that our “neighbour” is not limited to those who are close to us or share our beliefs, but includes anyone in need of mercy and compassion.

Chiara Lubich, founder of the Focolare Movement, beautifully expressed this Christian love when she said, “Love your neighbor as yourself. But love everyone, without distinction, with the love of Jesus. Love first, love always, and love all.” Her life was a testimony to this radical love, particularly in a world so often divided by conflict, indifference, or fear. Chiara taught that true love of neighbour means being the first to love, expecting nothing in return, and seeing Christ in each person we encounter.

In practical terms, loving your neighbour means showing hospitality, offering a listening ear, supporting those who are suffering, and fostering unity in your community. It is choosing compassion over judgment, peace over division, and service over selfishness. As Christians, we are called to be witnesses of God’s love in action, so that through our love, others may come to know the heart of Christ. In doing so, we not only follow His command but become instruments of His peace and healing in the world.
